"It is a Poverty" by David Christensen
Jan 7th 2013, 21:22

"It is a Poverty" for soprano, alto, piano & percussion by David Christensen Performed by: Suzanna Mathews -- soprano; Hannah Benson -- alto; Jordan Newhouse -- piano; Taylor Anthony -- percussion "It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish" -- Mother Theresa Many of our communities share an understanding that we should give, help, "be good people," and probably support a child in Africa. But it is often a theoretical understanding that does not have the backing of our whole heart or mind. This piece came about as a result of taking an honest look at my own brokenness. Why am I so seldom moved to help? Why do I do but a mere fraction of what I could to change this world? What are the things in my life that make my convictions so theoretical? And how can I change? - It is my hope that this piece will give you pause to consider your life, your heart, and your need to be sensitive to the need around you. We are blessed in order to bless others. Mother Theresa picks up on this, saying, "Love, in order to survive, must be nourished by sacrifice, especially the sacrifice of self." This is not simply a calling for some, but an ever-relevant way of life that is essential to our ability to experientially know love. We must give of ourselves. To live any other way is the deepest poverty. The piece is structured in three segments, which are each composed of two contrasting parts. The first segment is intended to convey the beauty of brokenness ...

Pakistan- Energy crisis, security issues, widespread poverty
Jan 7th 2013, 17:27

Aside from security issues, Pakistan also has to worry about widespread poverty. The UN says more than half its population barely have enough to eat, and an energy shortage is making things worse. Double digit inflation in recent years has pushed the price of basic staples beyond the reach of many families. Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid reports from Islamabad.
