On the road to fault-tolerant quantum computing: High temperature superconductivity induced in toplogical insulator
Sep 17th 2013, 00:47

Scientists have induced high temperature superconductivity in a toplogical insulator, an important step on the road to fault-tolerant quantum computing.

iPad app teaches students key skill for success in math, science, engineering
Sep 16th 2013, 14:35

Engineers have developed an iPad app that helps students learn spatial visualization, an essential skill for doing well in science, math and engineering. They have been testing the app during a high school summer program as well as on undergraduate students at the school.

When technology merges with healthcare: Mobile diagnostics and image analysis for antibiotic resistance
Sep 16th 2013, 14:34

Two examples of the merging of technology and healthcare have been demonstrated, including a mobile wireless system that monitors the health of elderly people in their own homes, using miniature sensors, and a novel optical system for detecting antibiotic resistance, which can determine in just two hours if bacteria react to a specific antibiotic.

Graphene photodetector integrated into silicon chip
Sep 16th 2013, 13:08

Today, most information is transmitted by light -- for example, in optical fibers. Computer chips, however, work electronically. Somewhere between the optical data highway and the electronic chips, photons have to be converted into electrons using light-detectors. Scientists have now managed to combine a graphene photodetector with a standard silicon chip. It can transform light of all important frequencies used in telecommunications into electrical signals.
