The World According to Monsanto (GMO's)
Feb 14th 2013, 23:41

Monsanto is the world leader in genetically modified organisms (GMO's), as well as one of the most controversial corporations in industrial history. This century-old empire has created some of the most toxic products ever sold, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and the herbicide Agent Orange. Today, Monsanto likes to style itself as a "life sciences" company. The leader in genetically modified seeds, engineered to resist its herbicide Roundup, claims it wants to solve world hunger while protecting the environment. In the light of its troubling past, can we really believe these noble intentions? Misleading reports, collusion, pressure tactics and attempts at corruption: the history of Monsanto is filled with disturbing episodes. Behind its clean, green image, Monsanto is tightening its grasp on the world seed market, striving for market supremacy to the detriment of food security and the global environment. There's nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it -- it's strategic. It's more powerful than bombs. It's more powerful than guns. This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting ...

NEWS ALERT! Starvation and Obesity Epidemic of the World | Diet hunger famine crisis human rights
Feb 14th 2013, 12:32

Please like, share and subscribe! Today 18000 to 40000 children will starve to death. And according to the "World Health Organization", 3.7 billion people are malnourished, while 1 billion are overweight and another 1 billion are obese. There is a serious crisis here, and no one seems to care. It is wrecking our beautiful planet and making everyone sick and fat. While in the developing nations, children are starving, and don't have access to clean safe drinking water. Why is this? It is not that we don't have enough food to feed everyone; we in the West and around the world grow enough food to feed some 12 to 15 billion people. It is that we are eating about 16 times the food that could otherwise feed the starving. Wild edible crops are not cultivated, and the current food production is very inefficient to produce. Not only does it cause mass famine, but also environmental destruction and death to millions of animals. "human rights" = "animal rights" = "earth rights" Learn more. www.michaellanfield.com

Zoe's Ark: Charity or child trafficking?
Feb 14th 2013, 12:19

Two French charity workers have been sentenced to two years in prison for illegally trying to fly 103 African children from Chad to France in 2007. So, how dangerous is this so-called do-it-yourself humanitarianism? Was the Zoe's Ark campaign to evacuate children from Darfur a case of humanitarian goodwill gone wrong, or a more sinister cover for child trafficking?

Dr Terry Wrigley, Poverty, inclusion and achievement: Is there more that schools can do?
Feb 14th 2013, 07:49

This workshop takes as its starting point the psychological and social effects of child poverty. It will critically examine some of the explanations of how deprivation tends to lead to underachievement, and open up some new issues and questions emerging from research. These include ability grouping, community involvement and whether children from poorer neighbourhoods tend to experience more restricted forms of teaching (a 'pedagogy of poverty'). Examples will be provided of innovative schools which are making a difference. Participants will be invited to look at how much we know of children's lives outside of school, including family interests and support, and at how school-based research can be used to raise awareness about the danger of 'pedagogies of poverty'. The workshop relates to the presenter's new book Living on the Edge (co-author John Smyth) and to his involvement in Social Justice Re-considered (a collaboration involving staff at Moray House, University of Edinburgh).

Haiti's Government Confronting Extreme Poverty
Feb 11th 2013, 16:43

Steven Werlin of Fonkoze, the largest micro-finance institution in Haiti, describes why working with the government is very important for organizations operating in the country. This importance is created by the long history of development initiatives failing to work in Haiti, Werlin says, because people complain that the government is weak and then doom projects by refusing to work with them. However Haiti's new government is taking extreme poverty seriously, he says, embodied by a presidential task force established to work on the problem. This is important for NGOs like Fonkoze because individually they cannot solve extreme poverty across the country, but government can coordinate efforts in different geographic regions to make programs run more efficiently for a larger effect.
