| | 101 East - Down and Under Feb 8th 2013, 07:41 | Australia is one of the richest nations in the world. Yet there is a growing poverty gap which can be seen in suburbs like Claymore. The New South Wales government built this public housing estate in the 1970s and filled it with people from Sydney's poorest families, creating a welfare ghetto. Today, Claymore is one of the most disadvantaged suburbs in Australia with the highest proportion of young children anywhere in the country. But poverty in wealthy Australia is not limited to Claymore. According to surveys and reports, 2.2 million Australians live below the poverty line, while more than 600000 children under 15 live in households where no one has a job. 101 East hears the heart-wrenching stories of the economically disadvantaged children from modern Australia and asks why the cycle of poverty has not been cracked in this rich nation. | Views: 201 18 ratings | | Time: 25:01 | More in News & Politics |

| | Gaza - Russian Charity Aid Arrives Jan 30th 2013, 15:55 | Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org: www.amara.org Gaza - Russian Charity Aid Arrives A Russian delegation arrived in the Gaza Strip on Monday with medical supplies, which are severely lacking there because of the Israeli blockade. The delegation consisted of journalists, activists and representatives of charitable organizations. "We arrived here together with the Solidarity fund to breach the blockade. As we found out in the hospital, delegations don't arrive often despite a lot of our citizens living in Palestine. They constitute the majority of foreigners who live here", said author Eldar Abazhurov. The medicine was bought for around 3 million rubles ($100000), which was raised throughout Russia by the charity Solidarnost (Solidarity). The members of the humanitarian delegation also met with representatives of Gaza's authorities and families living there. Maher Draibeh from the Health Ministry says Gaza is thankful to Russia for its help. "We are thankful to the delegation; they represent Russia and its people. They sent us a lot of medicine and equipment for dialysis." | Views: 36 1 ratings | | Time: 02:39 | More in News & Politics |

| | Spain - 11 Million On Verge Of Poverty - Many Now With Mental Health Problems Nov 1st 2012, 18:56 | Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org: www.amara.org Eleven and a half million people live on the verge of poverty and social exclusion in Spain. Nearly six million people are unemployed. The economic situation is having a direct impact on people's health. "Gradually I began to notice that I couldn't sleep, constantly was in a bad mood, I had to take tranquilizers and antidepressants", says Gloria Garcia, who suffers from mental health problems. She was left without a job, without any prospects. For people over 50 there are not many opportunities on the labor market. "The situation is becoming increasingly worse, and to wake up in the morning is very hard for me", says Gloria Garcia. "Unemployment is one of the factors that most affects people's self-esteem and can lead to anxiety, depression and the consumption of alcohol and drugs, which makes people's mental state even worse," says Jeronimo Saiz, President of the Psychiatric Association. Spain is seeing an increase in people suffering from psychological problems and at the same time there are cutbacks in healthcare funding. "We are in a situation which is quite difficult to solve, because at present, psychological and psychiatric examination is more important than ever", says Isidro Perez, a psychologist. These psychological problems are frequently seen among the poor population. "Any stressful situation can strengthen the pathology of mental illness", says Rafael Fernandez Garcia Andrade, psychiatrist ... | Views: 200 0 ratings | | Time: 03:42 | More in News & Politics |
